Volunteer in South Africa

Come to South Africa and volunteer at one of our many ongoing projects. You can be helping in a Township with everything from working in a school to painting and decorating. Alternatively, you can work in a design studio. Find out more below. Or, come to South Africa for one of our many College Courses first for up to six months. You will get an accredited qualification which will help you in your chosen field. You will also get an opportunity to work with a volunteer organisation doing development projects.

“We deeply believe in giving something back to the community, it’s ingrained in our DNA. South African Homestays provides support to ongoing projects such as sewing club, creches, vegetable gardens and local townships schools and overall community development”

Here is how it works;

For students from 16 years upwards

If you are in your Gap Year, wanting a few weeks away or just want a holiday with a difference, then apply to join our amazing Volunteering Course, a short drive from Durban or around Cape Town. The Projects are different and depend on your chosen location. The duration can be from 2 to 8 weeks

Volunteering plus Education

Join our High School Exchange Programme and also register also for Volunteering either at the weekends or school holidays with one of our linked Volunteering Courses around Howick ( KZN area ) or Stellenbosch. Our High School Experience programme runs from 1 month to 1 academic year

Volunteering plus education

We have many organisations in South Africa, that we work with that you can be part of.

Animal Rescue Centre (Tears)

TEARS Animal Rescue is one of the country’s leading organisations. Its mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home domestic animals, as well as provide veterinary services to local communities.

Marine Welfare Societies

Shark Warrior Adventures, operating from our beach-front Shark Warrior Adventure Centre, offers water sport activities, marine courses and dive expeditions. They positively impact on global ocean and wildlife conservation through a growing network of responsible travelers.

Helping Cheetahs at the Cheetah Sanctuary

Surfing down on Muizenburg Beach

But you have to be a pretty awesome Surfer to get this job!

Local Junior Schools helping with English, Sports, Art, Science & Maths in Masiphumelele

Township (Masiphumelele) Volunteering

During your internship in Masiphumelele you will be given the choice of helping in the school in either the English, Maths, Science or Sports Department. There is also the chance to help with IT / Computer Skills or work in the Library. All the classes are large & lively so be prepared for a hectic day. Many of our English or Maths classes are led by English, American or Australian teachers.

Good at Sewing? Then come and help in the Sewing Café, where you can help teach students to sew as well as teach them computer skills and tasks to enable them to set up their own business.

If these are not for you then you could work in the Creche/Nursery, Painting and Decorating or helping with the Vegetable Garden & Allotments. There is always a huge selection to choose from. We also run schemes harvesting & preparing Vegetable Gardens in Khayelitsha for local residents.

If you prefer Volunteering only

“Then here are some of our other ongoing Projects.”

Maths Lab

The Lab was designed for modelling a student-discovery approach to Maths instruction for Ukhanyo teachers. Each morning four sections of grade 4 learners spend 45-50 minutes in the Lab with their teacher, Scott or Laurie, and the new Lab assistant. Our goal is to demonstrate that efficiency of learning, knowledge retention, and even student behaviour improve directly as classroom instruction shifts from a teacher-centric to a student-centric model.

Sewing Club

There is also a super Sewing Club where local ladies are taught how to use a sewing machine professionally. Help them with their skills and assist in the work they are undertaking…

Sports at School

We are trying to forge strong links and assist in a local Township but football is always the common language.

Design Studio Internship

We are able to offer internships at a web design studio in Cape Town. Perfect for young people who love both IT and design, it is a great chance to meet like-minded designers who can share their skills and talk about the industry. Please note the student will only be offered this opportunity if they are really interested in IT and learning about design on Apple iMacs etc.

Accommodation

When you offer your services as a volunteer

The cost of your stay will include host family accommodation on a full board basis. Breakfast and evening meals are taken with the host family and you will be given a substantial packed lunch each day. All our host families are well appointed and regularly inspected by us. Your host family will be within a short disance of your chosen project and  within easy reach of shops, trains and  local transport.

Host family accommodation

To be a Volunteer or an Intern you must be 18 years or older. We can arrange accommodation locally to your work or you can choose your own.  We will assist and guide you all the way. Getting to and from your placement can be by walking, Uber taxi, or one of the many economically priced mini buses. On a Friday night, you have the option of transferring to Cape Town to spend time there at a Back Packers Hostel, returning to your placement on Sunday night.

Hostel accommodation

If you choose to reside in one of our recommended Hostels, then you will need to be self sufficient. The Back Packers Hostels are based in towns close to shops, restaurants and bus stops. Alternatively Uber Taxis and Mini Bus travel is popular and cheap! If you don’t like the idea of local transport, it’s a brisk walk or try hiring a bike and using that. You can choose to have room only with breakfast or self contained accommodation. They are all well run and well established. Even the local Supermarket is less than 5 minutes walk.  Please note, if there is a small group of you arriving together, then renting accommodation is another option and you “ self cater”
