Come to South Africa and do an Internship at one of our many ongoing projects, all based around the naval area of Simons Town. On your Internship you can be helping in a Township with everything from working in a school to painting and decorating. Alternatively you can work in a design studio. Find out more below.

Township (Masiphumelele) Internship

During your internship in Masiphulmelele you will be given the choice of helping in a school in either the English, Maths, Science or Sports Department. There is also the chance to help with IT / Computer Skills or work in the Library.

Good at Sewing? Then come and help in the Sewing Café, where you can teach students to sew as well as teach them computer skills and tasks to enable them to set up their own business.

If these are not for you then you could work in the Creche/Nursery, Painting and Decorating or helping with the gardening Allotments. There is always a huge selection to choose from.

You can choose to do either an Internship only or Internship PLUS where you will also get two weeks of intensive One to One English Lessons before you begin with an English Tutor.

Volunteering in Masiphumelele is the single most gratifying thing I have ever done.

Some work and projects available, subject to vacancies and qualifications are:

Our Ongoing Projects with Red Hill

Currently we are supporting Red Hill with the following ;

Raising funds to equip the Creche so the babies have a changing table as well as travel cots to sleep in. Interactive toys are also on our list

We are also helping re-equip the Clinic there, which was recently closed. We hope to help it re-open very shortly

Finally, as many residents do not have a substantial meal every day, we are helping with preparing Vegetable Allotments so they can be self sufficient and eat well

Other outdoor projects

If you feel that your chosen career isn’t with children or teaching, then could we suggest you help at the Shark Warrior Adventure Centre?
Here you can teach or help with groups coming for Kayaking; Kelp Snorkeling or simply learning about Sealife Conservation.

Still not your thing?

Then the local High School is looking for help with landscaping projects for the gardens; play areas and vegetable patch. These projects would be ideal for students with a Horticultural background

Finally…. If none of the above suit you, then come and help at our two local Golf Courses; help preparing the Greens; Caddying or just helping in the Bar and Restaurant there.

What accommodation will you have if you offer your service as volunteer?

The cost of your stay will include host family accommodation on a full board basis. Breakfast and evening meals are taken with the host family and you will be given a substantial packed lunch each day. All our host families are well appointed and regularly inspected by us. Your host family will be within walking or cycling distance of your chosen projects. Additionally you will be provided with a bicycle to enable you to get around, although you will be based within easy distance of shops, trains and your chosen project as well as other Intern students.

Design Studio Internship

We are able to offer internships at a web design studio in Cape Town. Perfect for young people who love both IT and design, it is a great chance to meet like-minded designers who can share their skills and talk about the industry.

Please note the student will only be offered this opportunity if they are really interested in IT and learning about design on Apple iMacs etc.

Host family accommodation

To be a Volunteer or an Intern you must be 18 years or older. We can arrange accommodation locally to your work or you can choose your own.  Getting to and from your placement can be on a bike, Uber taxi, or one of the many economically priced mini buses. On a Friday night, you have the option of transferring to Cape Town to spend time there at a  Back Packers Hostel, returning to your placement on Sunday night.

Hostel accommodation

If you choose to reside in one of our recommended Hostels, then you will need to be self sufficient.  The Back Packers Hostels are based in towns close to shops, restaurants and bus stops. Alternatively Uber Taxis and Mini Bus travel is popular and cheap!  If you don’t like the idea of local transport, it’s a brisk walk or try hiring a bike and using that. You can choose to have room only with breakfast or self contained accommodation. They are all well run and well established. Even the local Supermarket is less than 5 minutes walk.

If you are placed around Gordons Bay or Somerset West, then the set up is the same, host family or Back Packers Hostel.

Please note, if there is a small group of you arriving together, then renting accommodation is another option and you “ self cater”

Internship time scales

→ You can do your internship from 4 to 12 weeks

I was looking for a safe and interactive group volunteering trip to Africa with students from other parts of the world. It was great and totally enjoyable.
